Representation
of women in the media
A Positive representation of a woman:
Adele
Adele
is an example of a positive woman within the media. Most woman are perceived in
a more negative light and the media often make stories and twist words to make
people look at them as if they are not good role models to look up to. Adele is
different because she is represented as a successful and powerful woman who
empowers women within the songs she sings. Adele is confident within herself
and doesn’t let what people say about her affect the way she acts and she does
what she believes is best.
In
the media we always see pictures of celebrity’s on nights out so drunk that
they don’t even know they are doing whereas we don’t see articles or pictures
of Adele in magazines being seen in that way, this is a good representation of
Adele because she isn’t just seen as someone who always drinks alcohol and
someone who is irresponsible and the younger generation could look up to her
for a good reason because of this.
The
internet plays a big part of the representation of women within the media, you
can simply google a person’s name and everything that’s ever been wrote about
them will come up within seconds. While googling most celebrity’s negative
stories will come up about them however when you google Adele one thing that
comes up is the amazing work she does for charity. Adele has performed in numerous charity
concerts throughout her career. In 2007 and 2008 she performed at the Little
Noise Sessions held at London's Union Chapel and all of the proceeds from the
concerts she donated to Mencap which works with people with learning
disabilities, Adele doing things like that is a positive way of her being
represented because it perceives her to be a kind woman who people can look up
to. That is just one of the many charity things she has done.
Adele
is also represented to be a kind women who loves her family. She once took time
off writing music so she could spend some quality time with her family. She
also has a daughter and the media show how much of a good mum she is and you
can clearly see how much she loves and adore her child and wants the best for
her. Adele also has a long term boyfriend who is also the father of her child,
this is a good thing because she isn’t represented as someone who goes from boy
to boy.
Overall
Adele is mainly represented as a strong, confident, kind and family loving
women. This is a positive way to be seen and many people can look up to Adele.
A negative representation of a women:
Katie
Hopkins
When people
hear the name Katie Hopkins most people feel the same way, angry. This is
because the way she represents herself within the media. Katie is seen as an
argumentative woman who thinks she is always right, she is often on talk shows
like ‘this morning’ putting her opinion across in front of the world, her
opinion is what makes most people dislike her, she often talks about topic that
people feel strongly about and most of the time she has a different opinion to
everyone else. If you Google her name the majority of the things that come up
are negative. I goggled weather people think if she is a good role model or not
and this survey come up and as you can see only 11% of people said she was
one.
Katie Hopkins
is seen as a bully and is often shaming people about their looks. She shames
overweight people and puts them down constantly about the way they look. she
feels so strongly about her opinion on overweight people that once she made a
TV show of her putting on a lot of weight and shown herself losing it within a
short period of time, she done this to prove her point of that overweight
people are just lazy and it’s easy to lose the weight, while doing the TV show
Katie did say she found it more difficult than she thought she would, after
hearing her say this many people thought she would be nicer to overweight
people and respect them more but this was not true, she is still on day time TV
slating people. As well as being a bully Katie often contradicts herself on the
things she says, she once said she doesn’t like it when parents name their
children after places like countries even though her child is called ‘India’,
when question about this live on TV she still thought her opinion was right
even though she had done it herself and that it’s not the same when she does it.
Overall Katie
is a really bad role model as she is represented in a way where she is seen as
a bully and an argumentative person who always thinks she’s right.
